APES Air Pollution Practice Test – Prep, Practice Exam & Study Guide

Climate change can significantly affect air quality, particularly through the mechanism of increasing ground-level ozone levels. Ground-level ozone is a harmful air pollutant that forms when sunlight reacts with pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides, which can be released from vehicles, industrial facilities, and even natural sources. As global temperatures rise due to climate change, the conditions become more favorable for the formation of ground-level ozone. Higher temperatures can accelerate the chemical reactions that create ozone, leading to higher concentrations in the atmosphere on hot and sunny days.

This increase in ground-level ozone can have detrimental impacts on human health, contributing to respiratory problems such as asthma, lung infections, and overall reduced air quality. Additionally, it can harm ecosystems and agricultural crops, further complicating the interplay between air quality and climate change.

In contrast to this correct answer, options suggesting that climate change improves air cleanliness or enhances agricultural productivity do not align with the prevailing evidence about the relationship between climate change and air pollutants. Furthermore, while climate change can influence wind patterns, significant shifts aimed at enhancing air flow for improved air quality are not a recognized or guaranteed outcome. Rather, the changes generally exacerbate existing air quality issues rather than resolve them.
